MY TAKE ON SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND TALENTS
SKILLS—The how to’s of a role, Word and Excel are skills to acquire. You have the capability to transfer skills from one task to another.
KNOWLEDGE—What you are aware of or know. For example, factual things such as bookkeeping. Experiential. Understanding or knowledge acquired along the way. Less tangible and harder to teach.
TALENTS—Talents are transferable from one situation to another. They are reoccurring patterns of behavior. Get a role or job that plays to your talents. Can’t teach talent.
For example, good with names; alphabetize spice rack; critical eye towards things; naturally good with numbers. These are all talents that are difficult to teach…especially if you have a natural tendency to do these things and do them well.
Some consider Strengths like Talents. They are unique to you and may not be known by others.
What invigorates you? Where does your passion lie? Build on Strengths or Talents and manage around weaknesses.
You will never be great at something you hate; you will not excel in that skill area.
You will grow most when you have the talent and strength or uniqueness to leverage. Some natural inclination to do it and do it well. Own it, name it, and apply the strength.
Effective people spend most of their time on things that invigorate them. Get more tasks and responsibilities in areas that invigorate you. Therefore, you can play to your strengths.
If you don’t define your strengths, other people will identify them for you. Or at least their perception of your strengths. Do you lose track of time during some of these activities? If so, you may be using your Strengths. Whatever it is, how can we do that type of activity more often?
World or family just wants you to get the job done. They are ambivalent to whether you use your strengths or not. It’s up to you to find ways to leverage your Strengths and Talents.
